Those of you who know me well, know that I like, from time to time, to climb up on my proverbial soapbox and state my piece. Maybe augment my argument by pounding my right fist into the palm of my left hand, trying to get the world to understand the beauty, simplicity and logic of conservative values.
But today isn't the day for that.
Today, it's not about politics or pundits or party lines. It's not about the right or the left. And it's not about the daunting differences that divide us. In fact, quite the opposite. Today, it's about what we share. It's about freedom and the ability to choose a life and to protect that life once we've worked hard for it and have accomplished our goals. It's about being happy—all of us—and it's about protecting ourselves from those countries and fanatics that would tear our happiness from us given the minutest opportunity.
Friends, if you think that this freedom and the high standard of living we enjoy in this country just came to us because “we are America,” or because we are the world's largest superpower, or that we are just entitled to it, think again. Those freedoms many of us take for granted day in and day out, week after week and month after month have come to us at the hands and the spilt blood of those—all through our nation’s history—who would rather die than have those same freedoms torn from us.
Today, especially, I am eternally grateful for the willingness, the bravery and the patriotism of our service men and women and wish my pathetic words of thanks could do justice to the debt I owe them and all who have gone before them. Happy Memorial Day, friends!
